Nyhedsbrev: Encouraging words - We need to realize how precious the Bible is

Text: Acts 17:11

Hi everybody,

I have just finished speaking on dating, love and sex at our annual teenage camp in Sweden. It appears that many young people have never really reflected on the dangers of pre-marital sex. I arrived home on Sunday evening  with just enough time to pack a few items before heading off to Finland on Monday with my children for the Trans-European pathfinders Camporee. Thousands of teenagers and youngsters from all over Europe will be converging on a beautiful camp site in Finland situated on the banks of a lake and surrounded by forest.

The last few weeks I have had the opportunity to both reflect and observe firsthand the habits of young people with regards to technical gadgets like mobile phones, iPods, mp3 and computers. In fact, in order to get the attention of the teenagers we were forced to forbid mobiles during the meetings. I suspect things will be no different in Finland. However, before we criticize our young people we need to take a hard look at our own obsession with mobile phones to the extent that we have to ask people to switch them off during the service.

This got me thinking. I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bibles like we treat our cell phones? That is an interesting question when you think of how important cell phones have become to us. It seems as though everyone has one now. Our phones have become so essential to us now that we cannot live without them. In fact they accompany us wherever we go. But the question is: do we treat our Bibles the same way? Acts 17:11 makes mention of the Bereans who were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica and who listened eagerly to Paul’s message. The Bible tells us that they “searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” In other words  they studied the Scripture.

More and more in our fast paced lives we neglect the reading of the Bible. Many of our members no longer bring their Bibles to church and are happy to listen while somebody else reads and interprets the word. What we fail to realize is that everything we need for life –  everything we need to have a loving relationship with God – is found in the pages of the Bible. We are reminded in 2 Timothy 3:16 that “all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” We need to realize how precious the Bible is.

So let me ask you: How precious is the Word of God to you? How often do you spend time reading and studying the word of God? As it has been said, a Bible that is falling apart is usually a good indication of a life that isn't.

God bless
Berny
